Answer the following questions:

a. Why is freewriting also called ‘automatic writing’?

Ans: Freewriting is also called ‘automatic writing’ because it is performed without any conscious control to achieve a spontaneous expression.

b. How do you differentiate writing from speaking?

Ans: Writing has the advantages of editing but speaking doesn’t have this facility. In this way, writing is different from speaking.

c. What is the biggest obstacles in the writing process, according to Elbow? Do you agree with him? Why? Why not?

Ans: According to Elbow, editing is the biggest obstacle in the writing process. This is because a series of editing can diminish the natural creativity, the mind discharge.

d. How can freewriting overcome ‘writer’s block’?

Ans: There is only solution to overcome on writer’s block on freewriting that is practice. For this process, writer should choose words for topic heading, introduction, body part and conclusion.

e. What do you mean by ‘voice’ in writing?

Ans: Voice in writing our thoughts and ideas.

f. Elbow uses a simile to explain that freewriting “is like writing something and putting it in a bottle in the sea.” What does this mean? Explain.

Ans: Freewriting is like writing something and putting it in a bottle in the sea means freewriting doesn’t allow readers to feedback at all. It is worthless to know about freewriting.

Critical Thinking

a. How does the author persuade readers in this essay? What is he trying to communicate to the readers?

Ans: The essay ‘Freewriting’ explains how freewriting helps one to improve his/her writing skills. The author has presented his idea with relevant evidence and supportive discussion to persuade the readers. According to writer Peter Elbow, people can improve his/her writing is to do freewriting exercises repeatedly. The freewriting is spontaneous work. It doesn’t accept any feed back and there must be no discussion or comment at all.

If we want to end up our writing with some satisfactory, editing is necessary but freewriting doesn’t allow it. The habit of compulsive and premature editing makes our writing hard and dead. The essayist believes that there should be natural way of producing words. The mixture of a sound, a texture and rhythm called a voice. The voice is the main source of power in our writing and it can be done on regular writing.

b. Elbow said, freewriting “is an exercise in bringing together the process of producing words and putting them down on the page.” Do you agree with his statement? Why? Why not?

Ans: Freewriting is an exercise in bringing together the process of producing words and putting them down on the page. Yes, I agree with this statement. Freewriting can be done in a short period of time without stopping. There may be coherent or incoherent in it. In freewriting, writer should not be concentrating on spelling, grammar and similar ideas. Spelling and grammar blocks ideas.

When we freewrite, we express our ideas on the specific topic they come from our mind. It needs regular practice because freewriting doesn’t have editing. Freewriting is only for us to read unless we share our work with others. Practicing freewriting continuously will enhance our writing skill.

c. How did you learn to write? What was particularly difficult in writing? What inspired you to write? What are some of the challenges that you still face while writing?

Ans: I learnt writing after learning English Grammar and sentence structure. Before high school level, writing in English was one of the complicated tasks for me. When I was in 9th grade, I could hardly manage half of the paragraph on the assigned topic. I didn’t know proper grammatical structures, suitable vocabularies and coherence. When I learnt sentence structures, grammar rules and vocabulary, writing became easy.

English is an International language. If we know English properly, other subjects and computer literacy would be easy, this though inspired me to write. Now, I can complete writing task easily but I still get troubled with phrasal and slang words. I face some difficulties in accumulation of appropriate words.

a. My School Library

My School Library is a storehouse of books. It has a lot of different types of books. There are different subjects’ books in my School library. Students can get book issued in their library card. There re also many journals and magazines in my school library. Books are journals are issued for 15 days, then they should renew for next 15 days or I can get other book. There are three big rooms in library building. In one room, there are etxt books of science, commerce, education, humanities, la and information technology faculties. In second room, there are history, literature, journal and other books in different languages. The books are arranged in almarihs and shelves. The third room of the library is the reading room. It is a quiet place. It remains open all working day.

b. Moral Values I Like Most

Moral values are the principles and ethics that help us to live an honest life. It keeps our life on the right path. besides this, honesty and truthfulness are great moral values I like most. When we are honest and live by truth, there is not fear of corruption and violence. In this condition, there will be greater peace all around. We need to be courageous, bold, honest and truthful. It is easy to tell a lie and get benefit but we should try to live by truth. The truth may hurt us or someone but we may have to uphold the reality. We have to accept the truth at all times even the unfavorable time. We shouldn’t jealous others’ belongings. We should do smart work to earn money without cheating other persons.
